There is a particular kind of person who is the reason a local restaurant is full. They do not post. They have four hundred followers. But when they say a place is good, eleven people go, and the place gets a reputation.
In the creator economy as it is usually described, that person earns nothing, because earning is reserved for people with audiences. That is a measurement failure, not a value one.
Reach is not the same as influence
A post seen by fifty thousand strangers who scroll past is worth less to a business than a message to six people who turn up. Advertising has always known this and has never been able to buy it, because the second thing cannot be bought — only earned, and only by someone the six people already trust.
The economics of influencer marketing are built on the first number because it is the one that is easy to count.
Three ways a recommendation can pay
Worth knowing the difference, because they are not equally honest.
Paid to post You are paid regardless of outcome. Simple, and the reason audiences discount influencer recommendations heavily.
Paid per click Slightly better, still rewards volume over judgement. Encourages posting about everything.
Paid when someone actually buys Only pays when your recommendation led to a real transaction. Rewards being right, which is the only version that keeps the recommendation worth anything.
What this is not
It is not a side hustle, and anyone presenting it as income replacement is selling something. The realistic figure for a normal person recommending places they genuinely like is a meaningful discount on their own spending, not a salary.
That is still worth having. It is simply worth describing accurately.
The thing that keeps it honest
A reward for a recommendation only stays clean while the reward is smaller than the social cost of being wrong. Recommend a bad restaurant to six friends and you will hear about it for a year. That is a much stronger deterrent than any disclosure rule.
It is also why disclosure still matters: the person receiving the recommendation should be able to see that a reward is attached, and weigh it themselves. A system that hides that is not rewarding advocacy. It is laundering advertising.
Where to start
Nowhere special. Keep recommending what you would have recommended. The only change worth making is to use a channel where the recommendation can be followed to its outcome, so that when it works, the system knows it was you.
